CPV codes: how to read and use EU tender classification

The Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV) is the EU's system for classifying public procurement notices. If you want to find relevant tenders on TED, searching by keyword is not enough — buyers classify their notices by CPV code, and code-based search cuts through the noise.

How CPV codes are structured

A CPV code has eight digits. The first two digits define the main division, the next two the group, then the class, category and sub-category. A code ending in a dash, such as 72000000-5, is a top-level code. More specific codes narrow the category further.

72 — IT services and consulting.

71 — Architectural, construction and engineering services.

50 — Repair and maintenance services.

30 — Computer equipment and supplies.

How to search TED by CPV code

On TED, use the advanced search and enter one or more CPV codes. You can also filter by country, notice type, publication date and contract value. Save the search as an RSS feed or email alert for ongoing monitoring.

Search broadly at first. If you specialise in software development, start with 72000000-5 and then narrow to 72212110-6 or 72212200-4 based on the results you get.

Common CPV codes for SMEs

72000000-5 — IT services: consulting, software development, Internet and support.

72212110-6 — Development of software for business.

71241000-0 — Architectural design services.

71242000-1 — Engineering design services.

79311400-4 — Market research services.

79810000-5 — Printing and writing paper.

CPV codes vs free-text search

Free-text search misses notices written in another language or using terminology you did not expect. CPV codes are language-neutral: the same code means the same thing in every EU language. That makes them essential for cross-border bidding.

Automating CPV-based discovery

Bidly reads the CPV codes in every TED notice, maps them to your company profile, and scores each tender by fit. You do not need to remember every code or check TED manually — the radar surfaces the notices that match the services you actually deliver.

Always verify the full notice, eligibility and submission requirements on the original TED record before preparing a bid.

Search TED by CPV code automatically

Bidly scans TED daily, reads the CPV codes in every notice, and scores each one against your company profile and target markets.
